“Who are the People in Your Neighborhood” is a collaborative project between adult students at Portland Adult Education, the Bodhi Education Project, and surrounding public schools K-12. Our goal is to provide in-person cultural exchanges with speakers from around the world that are living right here in our communities. All people who come to live in Maine, including refugees, immigrants and asylum seekers bring with them a wealth of assets that could benefit us individually and as communities. However, connecting new comers to their new neighborhoods is a continual challenge. Culture, language, religion and community infrastructures can create barriers to making vital connections which could educate and enlighten us all. This project, “Who are the People in your Neighborhood” is designed to eliminate some of these barriers so that we might better embrace our ever growing global neighborhood.
This project provides educational exchanges both through web videos and programed school visits.
Through this project students and schools can:
- Create presentation for students about interests, talents and passions
- Listen to presentations provided by students for students in both English and other languages
- Practice language comprehension and writing through conversations and communications with native language speakers.
- Host a Cultural Connection event and have students from around the world come speak to your classroom, club or school.
